What are the Key Competencies and how do we integrate them at CAS?
Today’s students are almost certainly going to face challenges that today’s adults did not encounter when growing up. The nature and value of an Area School enables us to enjoy an unhurried approach and longer lasting relationships with our students. We enjoy an uninterrupted journey with them as they thrive in an inclusive and personalised education towards creative, connected, collaborative and confident outcomes.
The New Zealand Curriculum describes the Key Competencies as ‘capabilities for living and lifelong learning’. These essential skills are the competencies we all need to live, learn, work, and contribute as active members of our local and global communities. These competencies link directly to the Collingwood Area School Beliefs, Behaviours and Mission.
We provide sustained and ongoing opportunities to develop these competencies regardless of specialist subjects and extra-curricular activities, because they are woven throughout our learning, every day.
The five Key Competencies that we focus on are:
Thinking: to become an active problem solver, able to use and create knowledge and challenge assumptions.
Using language, symbols, and texts: to have multiple literacies, be numerate, articulate, and able to make meaning within a wide range of technologies.
Managing self: to be resourceful and resilient, able to successfully cope with change and set realistic positive goals, towards a balanced lifestyle.
Relating to others: as a good communicator, socially connected, confident in the world, and how to contribute positively towards it.
Participating and contributing: to build and grow positive relationships; actively involved in supporting communities which provide a sense of belonging and global awareness.
These Key Competencies relate directly to our Student Profile. We encourage our students to become CAS graduates who live and learn today in preparation for their future lives, as active members of the both local and global communities.
