At Collingwood Area School we provide countless opportunities for all our students across Primary and Secondary Syndicate to develop and demonstrate leadership qualities. In fact, growing leadership capacity in young people is part of our core business; it is work we take extremely seriously. Our aim is to instil and grow skills and values that will strengthen our students on their journey to become the leaders of tomorrow, to support both our local and global village.
The Secondary Syndicate has an impressive range of leadership opportunities on offer and by Year 11 to 13 may include serving on the Student Contact Team or working as Whānau Leaders, Sports Leaders, Cultural Leaders and as Environmental Leaders. This team is headed up by our two Senior Leaders who meet regularly with the Principal and Senior Management Team on consultation and planning matters. In addition, we have our Student Trustee Leader who sits on the Collingwood Area School Board of Trustees. This position is decided via a nomination and election process, which takes place in September every year.
While on the Board, our Student Trustee shares responsibility on governing the school and setting its direction. This includes the curriculum, staff, property, health and safety, finance and administration. They have the opportunity to attend highly specialised training and take part in the annual Spirit of Adventure voyage.
All our student leaders are challenged to take on roles where commitment, service to others and hard work are fundamental requirements. The titled roles are filled by a formal selection process and in most cases on-the-job leadership training is provided and in addition, residential courses. Our student leaders are provided with regular feedback to review and develop their leaderships skills further during the course of the year.
It is always a pleasure to work with such highly motivated young people.
